Kelsey: Restaurant Reviews Kampala

The tourist information about Uganda available on the web is sort of lacking. Uganda is a huge place for European tourists. Tons of people come here for safaris, sight seeing, and adventure tourism (bungee jumping, white water rafting and such). There is one guide book written about Uganda, its fine. I think it is bland. I like reading people's blog posts about places they have visited. They are much more exciting and usually more helpful.

So this is my incredibly selfless gesture for all the many Uganda tourists reading this blog. Some restaurant reviews.

I <3 New York Pizza Kitchen

That is literally the name of this wonderful hidden gem. This is the perfect restaurant for the long time traveller in Uganda. The person who has been on an adventure in the village and who has eaten more matoke than any one person should. This traveler wants a taste of home! And in my opinion this is the closest you can get.

This place is inside the parking garage of the Garden City shopping mall.

It is like semi classy New York City diner. And the fact that it is in the parking garage kind of adds to the New Yorkness of it. Obviously the most amazing thing about this place is that they have cupcakes. Cupcakes.

They are kind of mediocre. But they are 100 times better than a stale crumbly Ugandan cake. Which is basically your only other option. They are mostly just very pretty to look at. That is good enough for me!

These are the bagel chips and dip that they bring for free while you wait for your food. This automatically makes this my perfect place in Kampala. They make bagels! I know how not exciting a bagel sounds to everyone in America. But it is a big deal here.

I ordered a bagel BLT which came with delicious coleslaw.

Sandwich stealer.

Sar and Frank like it too.

The funniest thing about eating in any restaurant in Uganda is the 100% lack of customer service. The waiter will act like you are a huge burden to them and they are very annoyed that you chose to come to their restaurant today. Shop owners do that too. They will move extremely slow and sort of roll their eyes like, why are you here? It cracks me up.

This place had a really creepy waiter who would linger at the table. He asked a few questions and then started pointing to his ring finger and he was like, eh? eh?

But other than him it is a great place. I recommend the pizza, the red velvet pancakes, and the bagels! If this place weren't 3 hours away I am sure we would eat there often.

Sarah: How is Uganda?

Uganda is awesome. The weather is perfect (everyday), the people are lovely, the traffic is crazy, the food is delicious, and my family is better than I ever could have imagined. Here are some things I love about Uganda:

-People are friendly and polite. When you trip over your own feet, they say sorry.

-The weather is unbelievably gorgeous every. single. day. You have not experienced good weather until you come to Uganda.

-The food is to die for. I love me some chipati, pilau, and fresh fresh fresh pineapple. Yum.

-The last time I was in Africa, I felt like such an outsider looking in on African life. Now I feel like I am one - because I'm married to one.

-Everything is so green and lush. Even in the city. Prettiness all around me.

-Seeing Kelsey again has sucked. I don't know why we were ever friends. JUST KIDDING! I love that girl and the fact that I get to spend time with her in addition to my family and husband is a huge bonus.

-Speaking of my family - they are awesome. Yesterday Kels and I taught Grace (Frank's youngest sister) how to make pizza and it was such a great day. I have loved spending time with them and getting to know them : )

Because Frank's family was unable to attend our wedding, Frank and I decided to do a reception here in Uganda. His sisters planned the entire thing and it was so great. We had a thanksgiving service at the church with worship, a sermon (which was awesome), and prayers. Then we invited people to the reception at a Chinese restaurant. I could go on and on about the reception, but I'm just going to sum it up with this little nugget of gold: My womb was blessed by an auntie. She really wants twins.

I'm going to get on that right away.

Yes, Please!

My sister's baby shower was on Sunday and boy, am I glad it's over. That sounds really bad, but you might not know that I hate Hate HATE planning, coordinating, and orchestrating events (granted, I haven't had that much experience planning events, but still). For my sister's shower, I baked and cooked for three whole days, I made that cute bunting, and I worried about what games to play, if people would show up, etc. But the shower was great! My sister really enjoyed it, the games were tasteful, and I made way too much food.

Yesterday, I started training at Gap. Yeah, that's right, I finally got a job. I watched some training videos, filled out some paperwork, and bought some clothes. My first day I bought new clothes. But you would have gotten some new clothes, too! There was a final 50% off already on Sale items. And I get an additional 10% off sales items...so, that's 60% off sale items. $20 shirt for $4? Yes, please!

p.s. Kels, to answer your question, I chose glasses #4. I just need to order them.

Physics is phun

I had two things to do today. Renew my drivers licensee and pay my rent. I did one. 50% of my to do list got done. If I were still in school that would be an F. Thank God school is over and I am not being graded on life.

I blame Sarah for my lack of getting things done. She dragged me to Anthropologie. And to Frozen Yogurt. Such a burden. And then Scott NEEDED my help with a physics project (as in he brought it up around me and I weaseled my way in).

His task: He has to mail a single pringle to his teacher without it breaking and then he has to eat the pringle in physics class. He can't spend more than $5 on supplies and shipping. I am MUCH more excited about this project than he is. His plan was to just wrap some bubble wrap around it and stick it in a box. Lame sauce!

Test subjects:
This is a pringle in a sheet of sugar glass.

Pringles coated in sugar glass.

Cupcake cocoon

Cupcakes with a pringle surprise!

Next step is baking a cake with a pringle in it. I hope he gets extra credit for awesome packaging. If we could make a sugar box with a cake inside with a pringle inside that, that would be the best ever. THE BEST!!!

Finished product pics will be posted. Don't even worry.
